We are looking for an experienced Business Development Manager to lead and help expand the sales team at focusgov.
We create web sites and apps for local authorities who need to use digital to communicate with families, parents, young people, children and adults who need care. We do great work and our customers love what we do, and we’ve won recognition at national government level for several of our projects.
This is a key role within our business. Ideally you’ll be based at our Bristol office, or at least able to spend a few days a week there – a lot of the work will be ‘out and about’ working with current and potential customers and attending workshops / exhibitions / seminars / market engagement events.
You’ll be supported by the senior management team at focusgov but equally you’ll need to plan and manage your own time effectively and work without constant supervision.
We’ll also need you to identify and build partnerships with third parties with whom we can work strategically to provide local authorities with a more complete and wide-ranging service.
Our products and projects can be complex so there will be an initial steep learning curve, so some digital sales experience would certainly be of benefit. Buying from us is very much a consultative-based process and you’ll need to spend time to ensure customers understand our software, platforms and applications and how they solve the problems they face. To be able to do this you must know us and our technology inside out.

It goes without saying that you’ll need to be comfortable on the phone explaining potentially complex and technical work to people who might not be tech-savvy.
We’ll do our best to keep you up to date with the latest technology and techniques and how our customers can exploit them and there will be budget for attending relevant exhibitions and meet-ups. Equally you’ll need a solid interest in digital.
Due to the nature of our customers and the management position of the role we are probably looking for someone experienced in business to business sales for at least a number of years with a full understanding of how the entire end-to-end sale process works, from initial contact to final contract. If you need the basics explained, this isn’t the role for you.
Key personal qualities include:
Communication: you’ll be spending a lot of talking to local authorities face-to-face, or on the phone, or via email.
Presentations: you’ll be happy designing and running presentations in front of senior people.
Relationships: you’ll need to establish relationships with key individuals, so they think of you (and us!) when the time is right to buy. There are elements of account management within the role.
Driven: you’ll need to be prepared to put in some time, especially early on, to get rolling.
Resilient: you need to be in it for the long term. This is a growing team within an expanding business and you’re going to be in a key role.
The salary we’re offering for this role isn’t fixed but we’d expect to be paying around £30k to £35k basic, with a generous commission-based bonus on top of that.
